Founded as a private society in 1830 by anatomists and physicists and supported by wealthy subscribers, Dublin Zoo differed radically from other zoos of the period by opening its gates in 1840 to the public for a penny on Sundays. This gesture, remarkable for the time, established the affectionate relationship that exists between Dubliners and the `ah-Zoo' in the Phoenix Park. Stories of animals and visitors are interwoven to explore the evolution of Dublin Zoo in this celebratory history. Tales of elephant rides, chimpanzee tea parties, penguins, and the world famous `Irish Lion Industry' are combined with memories of family outings, school trips, ice skating and the fashionable dances of the mid-twentieth century.
The mixed fortunes of the Zoo are traced as it survived the Famine years, war and economic hardship. The gruesome death of an Asian rhinoceros in 1865 contrasts with the careful selection and breeding of an African white rhinoceros in 2008. The `execution' of Sita the elephant after she killed her keeper in 1903 contrasts with the internationally acclaimed habitat and husbandry for the herd of Asian elephants in the Zoo today. Now attracting well over 900,000 visitors a year with a professional Zoo team that contributes to international animal conservation programmes, Dublin Zoo continues to provide a day out for families with magical moments amid the smells, sounds, behaviour and wonder of animals.
