Trained as a counselor, Caravantes is host of the cable television show Dialog in Glendale, California, which discusses current trends in higher education. In this concise text he argues that a key reason for Latino underachievement is that Hispanic culture is incompatible with educational success in the U.S. As a solution, he suggests "Selective Cultural Adoption," a method for Latinos to retain certain aspects of their culture while simultaneously adopting components of American culture that will help them succeed, particularly in education.
