As the Navajo people move to take control of their own destiny, determining the future of the tribe and the Reservation, they find that walking in beauty becomes more complex. In the past, mining uranium on Reservation land caused suffering for the Dine, poisoning the land, the water, and the people. Despite this history, the tribe voted to build a nuclear power plant on the Rez, and construction is about to move into a new phase with the delivery of the reactor vessel.
A group of activists is determined to stop the plant by whatever means necessary - protests, sabotage, even domestic terrorism. The Reverend Buford "Ford" Tome, known to support the construction project, is the group's latest target; the attempted defusing of a bomb intended for Tome and his students results in the wounding of a Navajo police officer.
Ella Clah, Navajo Police Special Investigator, has two good reasons to want to track down the bombers - she's been dating Ford for a while and the injured cop is one of her own. The trail leads from a college campus, through cyberspace, to an insular religious community where Ella and Ford pretend to be engaged, to the police department itself.
With the possibility of betrayal from within the force never far from her mind, Ella finds herself tempted by the offer of a high-paying, high-powered job in Washington, D.C. She's worked hard to make a place for herself and her daughter in the Navajo Nation; can she walk away from that for the opportunity to make an impact on law enforcement nationwide?
