A Whisper to the Living

Inspector Porfiry Petrovich Rostnikov is an imperturbable one-legged policeman who is also one of the last honest civil servants in a very dishonest post-Soviet Russia. As a result, he and his team of like-minded policemen are often handed the cases that no one wants or that are fraught with potential political consequences.
Such as the case of a serial killer who has claimed at least forty victims, which has Rostnikov relentlessly haunting the Moscow park where the killer finds almost all his victims. Or the investigation of the disappearance of the enormously popular heavyweight boxer known as The Giant and the discovery of two bodies in a hotel room. One was the boxer's wife. The other was the boxer's sparring partner.
As if that weren't enough, Rostnikov and his team are given the job of protecting a visiting British journalist who is working on a story about a Moscow prostitution ring. This may be the most deadly assignment of all as Rostnikov uncovers a chain of murders that lead to a source too high to be held accountable. This time, pursuing justice puts him in a difficult political position that could cost him his job ... or his life.
