Since the idea of the "kingdom of God" in the Bible's New Testament is generally assumed to be founded upon the understanding of Yahweh's kingship in Second Temple Judaism, which in turn is primarily founded on the Hebrew Bible, Christian Origins scholar Moore (religious studies, U. of Calgary, Canada) turns to the Hebrew bible in order to more fully understand the "God is king" metaphor. She takes issue with Norman Perrin's classification of the kingdom of God as a myth-evoking symbol, arguing instead that the "God is king" metaphor serves as a relational metaphor referring to "God as covenantal sovereign of Israel, God as universal suzerain over the world, and God as monarch of the disadvantaged." She finds that this diversity of meaning runs through the Hebrew Bible, Second Temple Judaism, and the sayings of Jesus. Annotation c2009 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
