Our Schubert: His Enduring Legacy

In this book, Schroeder (musicology, Dalhousie U.) considers how audiences and artists throughout history have related to Schubert and his music. He first discusses Schubert's life and its influence on his compositions, including the importance and personal function his songs had and their association to his other works; his relationships with contemporaries; his political activism; and his final illness. In the second section, Schroeder looks at his legacy and effects on other artists from his death to the present, including the influence of Winterreise, the String Quartet in D minor, the Piano Trio in E flat major, the Piano Sonata in A major, and the Quintet in C major on novelists, playwrights, and filmmakers like Gustav Klimt, Elfriede Jelinke, Luis Bunuel, and Stanley Kubrick.
