The Ocean Life Of Atlantic Salmon - Environmental And Biological Factors Influencing Survival

An ode to "the best worker in Europe" by English poet Ted Hughes launches the introduction to these 15 papers collected from a November 1998 workshop organized by the Atlantic Salmon Trust (the editor's employer) and held at the Freshwater Fisheries Laboratory at Pitlochry. This forum fills in gaps in knowledge of the wild Atlantic salmon's ocean life (with passing reference to Pacific salmon) and offers recommendations for future studies. Contributions add to understanding of environmental factors relevant to declining salmon trends, impacts of long-term climate change, relative importance of freshwater and marine stages, oceanic distribution and migration, causes of mortality, and assessment models for these survival variables.
