Design For Thermal Stresses

The book will approach the subject by presenting an analysis of the thermal stresses, based on “first principles” (force balances, energy balances, etc.), followed by applications of synthesis techniques to control thermal stresses. The first part of the text (Chapters 1–4) covers thermal stress design in bars, beams, and trusses, which involves a “strength-of-materials” approach. The second part of the
book (Chapters 5–9) covers more advanced thermal design for plates, shells, and thickwalled vessels. The final chapter (Chapter 10) covers the problem of thermal buckling in columns, beams, and plates. Various numerical and analytical design approaches are introduced for thermal stresses. Example problems are included to illustrate the application of the principles for practicing engineers and student study, and homework problems are included to allow practice in applying the principles.

Randall F. Barron is Professor Emeritus of Mechanical Engineering at Louisiana Tech University in Ruston, Louisiana. He received his BS in mechanical engineering from Louisiana Tech University, and his MS and PhD in mechanical engineering from The Ohio State University in Columbus, Ohio. He is the author of three college-level textbooks: Cryogenic Systems, Cryogenic Heat Transfer, and Industrial Noise Control and Acoustics.

Brian R. Barron is a lecturer in mathematics and statistics at Louisiana Tech University in Ruston, Louisiana. He received his BS degree in mathematics education from Louisiana Tech University, his MDiv from St. Paul School of Theology in Kansas City, Missouri, and his MS in mathematics and PhD in computational analysis and modeling from Louisiana Tech University.
