Begins a series of six volumes on the structure and functioning of ecosystems in headwaters, main stems, and estuaries of riverine systems of the US. Estuaries were selected primarily to represent geohydrological types, e.g., fjords, drowned river basins, barrier island estuaries, submerged grass meadows (southern Florida), mangrove estuaries, and tectonic-formed estuaries. The emphasis is on the importance of large numbers of species belonging to many phylogenetic groups working together to form functional communities that are able to maintain themselves over changing conditions and to function under many different environments.
