Ivory (department head, New Mexico State U.) and Acker-Hocevar (educational leadership, Florida Atlantic U.) present a collection of essays by school superintendents and other educational leaders on the challenges and achievements of a successful school board. This book grew from a collaborative longitudinal project of the University Council for Educational Administration (UCEA). From the UCEA research completed in 2003, Ivory and Acker-Hocevar identified six challenges and seven success strategies, and invited contributors to the UCEA project to write chapters for this book on the selected topics. Among the subjects covered in the 13 chapters: leading in an era of change; fostering student achievement; strategies for recruiting, training, and retaining good staff; shortages of resources; reelection; and understanding a superintendent's perspective. Gary Ivory is department head and associate professor at New Mexico State University. He is editor of What Works in Computing for School Administrators (Rowman & Littlefield Education, 2001) and is co-coordinating, under the auspices of the University Council for Educational Administration, the Voices study of school superintendents and principals. Michele Acker-Hocevar is a professor of educational leadership at Florida Atlantic University. She is co-coordinating, under the auspices of the University Council for Educational Administration, the Voices study of school superintendents and principals.
