商品簡介
In 1778, Connecticut sea captain Gideon Olmstead overcame his British captors, taking their sloop, Active , as a prize of war. Conflict ensued when the state of Pennsylvania also claimed the ship. This volume recounts how Olmstead pursued his claim through state and federal courts until the U.S. Supreme court ruled in his favor a ruling that led to an armed confrontation between federal and state forces. Kelly (history, D'Youville College) discusses the case within the context of constitutional history and describes its effects on the careers of political figures such as Benedict Arnold and Simon Snyder.
