Of the 17 papers delivered at the bifocal conference, 12 are published here, representing a cross-section of approaches to the general theme of implementing and using new technologies to investigate the material culture, artefact distribution, and the environment of the Roman world. Among the topics are a feminist critique of Romanization, assessing social and material networks of places at quarries in Roman Anatolia, a case study of regional cooking wares in northern Gaul to illustrate the use of GIS (geographical information systems) in artefact distribution, movement and water in second century AD Ephesus, whether cadastres existed in the Roman northwest, and age and identity of the elderly in southern Roman Britain in funerary contexts.
