Sanam is on the Nile just below the fourth cataract, and the ancient cemetery there was excavated by Francis Ll. Griffith in 1912, but the results were never published. Lohwasser discovered his records intact in the Griffith Institute at Oxford University, and analyzes them--particularly his tomb cards, photographs, and plan of the cemetery. She covers the setting, the archaeology of the cemetery, perspectives of a cultural-historical approach, and fragments of the Napatan society. This English version is a summary of the full study, which was presented as her Habilitation thesis in history and cultural studies at the Free University Berlin, and will soon be published in German.
