Women and Things, 1750-1950

Goggin and Tobin, both in the English department at Arizona State University, take a closer look at the often undervalued objects created by women. The time frame is from 1750-1950 and the objects vary from embroidered underwear to public sculpture. The essays discuss ways in which women created expressions of themselves through the objects they made or collected. Some of the women are nameless to us, the only relic of their lives being the things they made. The cultures are as apparently far removed as Aboriginal Australia, Native North America and middle class Britain, yet the common thread is strong. This is the first of what is now three volumes edited by Tobin and Goggin, all part of a series on women artists and craft makers. The essays are well illustrated with examples of the work.
