Religion in Sociological Perspective

This introductory textbook covers the central theories and methods of research in the sociology of religion. The overall framework of the text is the open systems model, which stresses both structure and dynamic process. The book also integrates conflict, functional, social constructionist, and rational choice theories, and examines research issues such as the support of generalizations. Learning features include chapter-opening inquiry questions, research boxes, boxes illustrating sociological concepts, critical thinking questions, and chapter summaries. This fifth edition has been rewritten to make material more accessible to students and nonspecialists. It incorporates new data sets and new material on topics such as religion and the life course, prosperity theology, and religion and new media.
