The Aga Khan Museum Toronto

Nearly twenty acres in suburban Toronto are being transformed to create a showplace Islamic art and culture that will be uinlike anything in the Western Hemisphere. This volume explores the concept and vision behind the Aga Khan Museum. It explains why His Highness the Aga Khan chose Tornoto as the location to exhibit his substantial collection of Islamic art and features interviews with the architects Fumihiko Maki and the landscape designer Vladimir Djurovic. Drawings of the center and its exquisitely landscaped grounds reveal a stunning contemporary design featuring white stone and an elaborate glass dome, with plenty of outdoor space for walking and contemplation. The multi-purpose facility, which, in addition to the museum, includes a theater, classrooms, and a full-service restaurant and private club promises to be a singular jewel in the crown of Toronto's architectural offerings, as well as a valuable contribution to the preservation and presentation of Islam's rich artistic heritage.
