Confucius, the Analects and Western Education

Recently retired from the education department at the University of Limerick, Flanagan (art and design, Limerick Institute of Technology) characterizes Confucius as one of the seminal teachers in human history, whose influence continues to be widespread across Asia and in Asian communities throughout the world. As the influence of a newly dynamic China spreads, he says, it seems important to know something of the origins of Asian thought and attitudes, especially in relation to politics, ethics, and the conduct of communal life. He explores such aspects as the historical context, familial duty as the basis of social order, the rectification of names, pedagogy and learning, and Confucianism and the modern age.
