Media, Technology, and Literature in the Nineteenth Century

Editors Colette Colligan and Margaret Linley (both: English and print culture, Simon Fraser U., Canada) provide an introductory essay in which they explain the scope of the volume and state: "Our bringing together of image, sound, and touch comes on the heels of a recent surge of cross-cultural, interdisciplinary collections that approach media history through concepts of media change, multi-media, old and new media, media convergence, residual media, and remediation. Following are 11 contributions arranged in sections on image, sound, and touch. More specifically, the articles address such topics as time, space, and narrative mediations in Victorian photography; word, image, and music in Tennyson, D.G. Rossetti, and Morris; piano, telegraph, typewriter--listening to the language of touch; the media geography of the clandestine book trade (1880-1900); and Frankenstein revisited--life and afterlife around 1831.
