Vohra (political science, Trinity College, Hartford) presents a political history of India, focusing on the last 150 years. Divided into three sections, the work reviews India's history up to the 18th century, the century of British colonialism from 1858 to 1947, and the last 60 years as an independent state. He is brief with his description of pre-modern life, but examines the rise and fall of ancient empires, as well as the historical influences of both native and foreign religions and political leaders. The focus of the section on British colonialism is on how India moved away from traditions of religious authority toward a nonsecular communal polity. The last section considers India's first Congress, the influence of Gandhi and authoritarianism on India's experience of independence, and the rise of Hindu nationalism and caste politics. It also contains material new to this edition that examines the 15 years that have elapsed since the first edition was published in 1996. This includes chapters on the rise of the conservative Bharatiya Janata Party, the general elections of 2004 and 2009, and a comparison with Modern China.
