Mawer (music, Lancaster U., UK) examines, in a cultural context, the ballets of French composer Maurice Ravel, which have not been singled out in an extensive study. She asserts that the study does not "engage" with music manuscripts or dance notation and movement analysis and avoids technical language so that it can be accessible to music and dance scholars and amateur concertgoers. There are music examples, however. Mawer delves into themes such as childhood, Greekness and myth, waltzing, and neoclassicism and looks at musical evolution and collaborative processes in Ma Mere l'Oye, L'Enfant, Daphnis et Chloe, Adelaide ou le langage des fleurs, La valse, Le Tombeau de Couperin, L'Eventail de Jeanne, and Bolero. Deborah Mawer is Senior Lecturer in Music at Lancaster University, UK. Her research focuses upon the analysis and history of early twentieth-century French music in its cultural setting, with a particular interest in ballet. She is author of Darius Milhaud: Modality and Structure in Music of the 1920s (Ashgate, 1997) and editor of The Cambridge Companion to Ravel (Cambridge, 2000). She also writes on issues in music education.
