Hansen (1910-79) was editor of The Militant, the newspaper reflecting the views of the Socialist Workers party, in 1954 when a sharp debate erupted in its pages regarding how marketing cosmetics and fashions was linked to the oppression of women. Here are seven articles and letters from the newspaper, discussions within the Socialist Workers Party, and an exchange of letters between its members taking up the issue from a materialist viewpoint.
