Recent Advances in Sustainable Process Design and Optimization

Chemical engineers outline some of the current responses in their field to calls for environmental sustainability, considering both the industrial consumption of scare material and energy resources and the generation of potentially polluting industrial waste streams. The emphasis is on integrated preventative approaches rather than on conventional waste treatment and secure disposal. Among the topics are a novel method for inhibiting runaway reaction through process modeling, an optimal water network with internal water mains and its industrial application, wastewater minimization in batch chemical plants, a process integration framework for the optimal design of combined heat and power systems in the process industry, and simultaneous recovering waste heat and reducing emissions in gas/oil separation plants.
