The History of British Women's Writing, 700-1500

This volume focuses on women's literary history in Britain between 700 and 1500. It brings to the fore a wide range of women's literary activity undertaken in Latin, Welsh and Anglo-Norman alongside that of the English vernacular, demanding a rethinking of the traditions of literary history, and ultimately the concept of 'writing' itself.

LIZ HERBERT MCAVOY, Reader in Gender Studies and Medieval Literature at Swansea University, UK, where she also directs the Centre for Medieval and Early Modern Research. She has published widely in the area of medieval women's writing and has recently completed a book on gender, space and medieval anchoritic enclosure.
DIANE WATT, Professor of English Literature at Surrey University, UK, and Deputy Director of the Institute of Medieval and Early Modern Studies, a research collaboration between Aberystwyth and Bangor Universities. She has published widely on medieval literature and culture and her recent publications include Medieval Women's Writing and The Lesbian Premodern (co-edited with Noreen Giffney and Michelle Sauer.
