Though the Joshua Roll is a standard work of art in art history surveys and has been the subject of monographs and facsimiles, scholars have failed to consider the written text accompanying the images and have thus consistently misinterpreted the work's origins, purpose, and the meaning of its beautifully executed pictorial narrative. This concise and authoritative study rectifies this, offering a fascinating account of the work's meaning, artists, origins, and original purpose as the model of a sculpted spiral on a commemorative column. Well-illustrated with color and b&w plates, the volume is distributed in North America by The David Brown Book Co. Annotation c2012 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
