Religion, Ethnicity and Contested Nationhood in the Former Ottoman Space

In light of ongoing conflict and tension where the Ottoman Empire once stood, historians of the region examine the impact both of the empire and of its absence. They consider such topics as the Ottoman Empire between successors: thinking from 1821 to 1922, the non-Muslim tax farmers in the fiscal and economic system of the Ottoman Empire in the 19th century, late Ottoman state education, the last of the Cretan Muslims between the empire and the nation-state, conversion to Islam in Bulgarian historiography, and recent developments in the historiography of Bosnia and Herzegovina relating to the Ottoman Empire and their impact on history textbooks. Jorgen S. Nielsen, Ph.D. (1978) in Arab history, American University of Beirut, is Professor of Islamic Studies at the University of Copenhagen. He has worked extensively on Muslims in Europe and is the chief editor of Yearbook of Muslims in Europe (Brill, 2009 and later).
