Psychosocial Occupational Therapy ─ An Evolving Practice

Cara and MacRae (occupational therapy, San Jose State U.) assemble 26 chapters that focus on the skills that occupational therapy brings to mental health practice, for occupational therapy students and entry-level through advanced practitioners. Occupational therapists from the US (as well as five new international authors in this edition) outline various conceptual models and their application to specific practice areas and contexts. They address understanding the person in context, theoretical concepts, diagnosis and dysfunction, mental health across the lifespan, mental health with physical disorders, occupational therapy intervention, and specialized roles. Along with a new subtitle, this edition has new chapters on recovery perspectives, mental health research in occupational therapy, infant mental health, managing pain in occupational therapy, assessment and outcome measurement, psychosocial occupational therapy in the school setting, and therapy in the military. Chapters on substance abuse and therapy in the criminal justice system have been revised, and content has been updated to reflect the second edition of the Occupational Therapy Practice Framework and include evidence-based research such as information on new treatments, interventions, and current thinking on mental health conditions.
