Facilitating Seven Ways of Learning ─ A Resource for More Purposeful, Effective, and Enjoyable College Teaching

Authors Davis and Arend (University of Denver) call for a paradigm shift in teaching methods in higher education, which should be based on seven evidenced-based, established theories of learning. After an overview of teaching and learning theory, seven chapters devoted to each of the seven ways of learning: building skills, acquiring knowledge, developing critical and creative thinking, cultivating problem-solving and decision-making abilities, exploring attitudes and feelings, practicing professional judgment, and reflecting on experience. The authors give guidelines on choosing among the seven ways and reflect on the potential of this framework for transforming college teaching. A companion website offers more resources and examples.
