The history of wine making in Maryland begins in 1648 with some of the first and most prominent Maryland families. One of the state's first governors is said to have imported 200 vines to southern shore. Marylanders continued to have an impact on the fledgling industry with the first book on viticulture in America coming from Havre de Grace. Though Prohibition interrupted the making of wine from the western mountains to the Eastern Shore, the industry bounced back in 1933 with the publications of Grapes into Wine by Maryland's Phillip Wagner, the godfather of American viticulture. Since that early history the wine industry has continued to grow in the state, and there are now thirty nine vineyards and six wine trails in the state. Many, such as Boordy and Fiore, hold tastings and other events to draw in Marylanders who are interested in treading the wine trails close to home. Author Regina McCarthy is intimately involved in promoting wine industry tourism in the state. With Maryland Wine: A Full-bodied History, she will trace the story of the vine in Maryland from the seventeenth century, through Prohibition and to the more recent boom of local vineyards.
