Thurman (1900-81) was one of the most influential intellectual and religious leaders in the US during the middle of the 20th century, leading the first delegation of African Americans to meet Mahatma Gandhi in 1936, and becoming one of the principle architects of the modern nonviolent Civil Rights Movement and a key mentor to Martin Luther King.
