The Memoirs of Jin Luxian, Volume One: Learning and Relearning 1916-1982

Jin Luxian (金魯賢) is considered by many to be one of China's most controversial religious figures. The Memoirs of Jin Luxian recalls Jin's childhood and education, his entry into the Society of Jesus and formation as a priest, his return to China, imprisonment and, finally, his release and return to Shanghai. This volume also describes the showdown between the Catholic Church and the Chinese Communist Party in the 1950s.

Jin Luxian is Roman Catholic Bishop of Shanghai. William Hanbury-Tenison left Britain in 1985 on a one-way ticket to study Chinese in Taiwan. He moved to Shanghai in 1994 with Jardine Matheson, but left the firm in 1999 to pursue his own interests, including participation in the unfolding life of the Shanghai diocese led by Bishop Jin Luxian.
