The World Bank Legal Review

This volume of The World Bank Legal Review, edited by Cisse (deputy general counsel, knowledge and research, World Bank), Muller (director, The Hague Institute for the Internationalization of Law, the Netherlands), Thomas (Cornell U. Law School, US) and Wang (law, Tsinghua U., China), emerged primarily out of contributions to the second annual World Bank Law, Justice and Development Week, held in November 2011, which brought together scholars, legal practitioners, development experts, policy institutes, and others to discuss legal innovations that support development. Nineteen papers discuss such topics as the past, present, and future of legal empowerment for the poor; the use of intellectual property law for facilitating technology transfer for development; a framework for legal empowerment and innovation through the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities; legal transplantation and legal development in transitional China; the role of law and institutions in expanding women's voice, agency, and empowerment; international asset sharing for development; new state activism in Brazil and the challenge for legal institutions; and assessment of the impact of OHADA, the legal treaty for the harmonization of business law in Central and West Africa.
