Critical Pedagogy in the New Dark Ages—Challenges and Possibilities

This collection of sixteen essays explores topics in and otherwise responds to Paulo Freire's highly influential "critical pedagogy." The essays bring together several big names in critical theory, including: Slavoj Zizek, Noam Chomsky, Howard Zinn, Cornelius Castoriadis, Stanley Aronowitz, and Henry Giroux. They are organized into five sections on education and neoliberalism, rethinking democracy and education, trends in critical pedagogy, critical pedagogy in the classroom, and critical pedagogy in higher education. Most of the essays directly address Freire's pedagogy, while others comment on applications and implications of it, while still others simply grapple with educating people in the context of economic empire.
