Tonneson (Center for Gifted Education, College of William and Mary) presents a math unit for high-ability learners in kindergarten and first grade that focuses on concepts related to linear measurement, the creativity elements of fluency and flexibility, and the interdisciplinary concept of models. The unit contains 13 45-minute lessons related to designing a community pool, and students examine the question of why to measure, the importance of accuracy, and the units and tools of measurement through play and planned investigations. Each lesson includes description of its purpose, main idea, objective, materials, activities, vocabulary, assessment, how to think about the problem, and extension activities, along with handouts.
