Brill's New Pauly—Classical Tradition

The practical reference assumes readers who know little or no Greek, and so offer simple paraphrases and quotes in translation and many illustrations, maps, and tables. The Sachlexikon was begun by August Friedrich (von) Pauly (1796-1845), continued by academic descents, and finally finished in 1980 with 86 base and 15 supplement volumes. Selections were published later, but by then much of the information was outdated and the effort to be concise constrained the addition of new information. This edition is divided into two series, on Antiquity and the Classical Tradition, and the doubling of size allows recent research to be incorporated.
