On Exit—Interdisciplinary Perspectives on the Right of Exit in Liberal Multicultural Societies

Just as with freedom of association, freedom of dissociation can be considered an integral element of citizenship in the liberal state, yet debate concerning the "exit option" is relatively new within liberal theory. In this volume, Borchers (philosophy, U. of Bremen, Germany) and Vitikainen (a doctoral student working on the limits of liberal multiculturalism at the U. of Helsinki, Finland) present nine papers exploring debates on exit within the broader context of liberal multiculturalism and the liberal state's responses to cultural diversity. Topics include the nature of exit with respect to constitutive groups (e.g., cultural, ethnic, or religious), the kinds of costs and obstacles associated with exit from constitutive groups, and ways to theorize the right of exit and its purposes.
