Nordic Health Law in a European Context ─ Welfare State Perspectives on Patients' Rights and Biomedicine

In contrast to the Anglo-Saxon world and continental Europe, the Nordic countries have only recently recognized health law, or biomedical law, as a special legal discipline. To provide the academic perspectives that the new field is requiring, the Nordic Network for Research in Biomedical Law was founded in Uppsala, Sweden in 2006. The 20 essays here explore some of the work the Network is carrying out in foundational issues, patients' rights, and biomedical science. The topics include the right to health as a human right in Europe, health law as a legal discipline, the detention of pregnant women to protect the f?tus, mutual recognition within the European Union of the concept of sickness and incapacity for work in a rehabilitative situation, and the human body and ancient and modern Norwegian property law.
