While introducing Western ideas, manners, and institutions into the town and villages, contends Cameroun native Mokosso (history, Southern U., New Orleans), Presbyterian missionaries concomitantly tried to destroy certain aspects of African culture considered inimical to Christian principles and practices. Among these are polygamy, bride price, child marriage, belief in witchcraft, divination, ancestor worship, and spirit possession. A complication was that the colonial authorities blessed some of these practices, though they shared a cultural background with the missionaries.
