The first edition was published in 1977 by Academia Publishing House of the Czechoslovak Academy of Sciences in Prague and the Noordhoff International Publishing in Leiden. It was used by specialists in many areas of mathematics and its application for several decades, but is no longer available. Two new authors have been added to update the introduction to function spaces, and the added material required it to be split into two volumes. This first looks at function spaces based on intrinsic properties of a function, such as its size, continuity, smoothness, and various forms of control over the mean oscillation. The second is devoted to function spaces of Sobolev type, in which the key notion is the weak derivative of a function of several variables.
