本套教材的編寫特色定位在體現青春活力、充滿動感以及對眼球和思維的刺激和引導上。除所選文章體現知性、趣味、文化層面的廣度與深度外，還以豐富多彩的插圖畫面、趣味性練習板塊、任務引導型的思維訓練等豐富的內容和有趣的形式來吸引學生，以達到快樂學習的目的。
Speed，SPread，Stimulation，Speculation是閱讀教學的四個層次，四種境界，這也是本套教材名稱的來歷。本冊教材關鍵詞是Speculation——思考與思維。本冊教材共1 0單元，生詞量約500個。本冊教材擬通過介紹社會科學與自然科學各個領域的動向與學術成果，激發學生的創造性思維以及對科學研究的向往與熱情。本冊的內容板塊模式仍為每單元三組主課文，但第三組含三篇較短小的文章，第一、二組各一篇文章，篇幅達1500詞以上，每篇課文后都有相關的練習； 同樣含有閱讀技巧，本冊技巧主要針對英語專業四級考試閱讀練習的綜合答題技巧；也有一組實戰型閱讀練習，程度相當于或略高于英語專業4級；此外，還有一個趣味性、益智型練習板塊。
