商品簡介
Wei (English, Soochow University, Taipei, Taiwan) grew up believing that Taiwan was only a temporary home until the communist regime in China was overthrown and her family could return home. This was reinforced by government, schools and the media. In the 1990s Taiwan began to see itself as a distinct state and the Mandarin language and culture was questioned as being the basis for Taiwanese identity. Wei feels that the language used helps to establish a sense of cultural identity. Using a study of English and French in Canada, she sees the rise of other Chinese languages as a sign of a society in transition. Looking at the developments on the Chinese mainland, she posits that equal changes may well occur there. Annotation c2008 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
