Focusing on news stories in the Nigerian press from 1996 to 2002--years in which the military dictatorship was at its height and a democratic government began--this study uses pragmatics and critical discourse analysis to investigate the ideological functions of language use. The analysis also concerns why and in whose interests particular linguistics constructions were used. Chiluwa is a lecturer in applied linguistics at Covenant U., Nigeria.
