Finkel and Moghaddam (professors of psychology with Georgetown U.) present studies on different understandings of human rights and duties conducted by empirical psychologists. The empirical papers address questions of the universality or cultural relativity of rights and duties, the possible source of universal rights and duties, differences between commonsense notions of duties and formal law duties, and the relationship between rights and duties. These eight empirical studies are then used as a jumping-off point for four normative studies examining the ontology of rights and duties, the interface between normative and empirical inquiry, and other issues.
