MacCluer (mathematics, Michigan State U.) examines numerical methods and symbolic manipulation based on modern Sobolev methods. Working on an advanced undergraduate level, MacCluer starts with steady problems, the heat equation and the wave equation, and the separation of variables. He describes Hilbert space, trigonometric expansions, rectangular and cylindrical problems, Bessel functions, orthogonal polynomials, spherical problems and Sturm-Liouville problems. He proceeds to choosing inner products, symbolic manipulation, operational calculus, Fourier integrals, and the Galerkin and Sobolev methods. Appendices include material on measures and integration and quantum mechanics.
