Social Media and Minority Languages

How today's media can be used to preserve and promote minority languages is an area of investigation that overlaps the interests of media studies and language studies scholars. Seventeen contributions address a wide range of topics including communication for social change, the use of Welsh in young speakers' social networks in comparison to its use in face-to-face settings, the influence of new technologies on endangered languages, the Welsh language on YouTube, and legislating the language of cinema (in Catalonia), among others. The editors are affiliated as follows: Enrique Uribe-Jongbloed (communications, Universidad de la Sabana, Colombia) and Elin Haf Gruffydd Jones (media and creative industries, Aberystwyth U., Scotland). Elin Haf Gruffydd Jones is Senior Lecturer in Media and Creative Industries and Director of the Mercator Institute for Media, Languages and Culture at the Department of Theatre, Film and Television Studies at Aberystwyth University. She has been working in the field of Minority Language Media Studies for over twenty years and has published widely on matters of language and media.
Enrique Uribe-Jongbloed is an assistant professor at the Faculty of Communication at Universidad de La Sabana, and the director of the Audiovisual Culture research group. He has been involved in various Minority Language Media studies endeavours since he joined the Mercator Media Network in 2007.
