Walker (history, U. of Sydney) uses a novel approach in his investigation of a seventeenth century espionage case. Presenting accurate history in a way that keeps the interest of the general reader is a challenge. Walker uses a narrative style interspersed with cartoons, musings on the craft of the historian and in taberna scenes made up of conversations with other historians in the bars of Venice. The stated intention is to unravel the case of the spy master Gerolamo Vamo and one of his victims, Antonio Foscarini. Was Foscarini innocent? Did Vamo invent the evidence that convicted him? While Walker's research seems solid, the profusion of writing styles, prose that varies from academic to purple and the use of four separate fonts in place of quotation marks and footnotes obscures rather than clarifies the topic.
