Each volume covers the organization, jurisdiction, activities, and administration of the Tribunal from 1 January to 31 December of the year. The Tribunal is the central judicial form in the comprehensive system for settling disputes established under the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea in 1982, which to date the US administration has not repudiated. One case was submitted to it during the year, the "Volga" Case (Russian Federation v. Australia), Prompt Release, on 23 December. Further proceedings were also held on a case that began in 2000 between Chile and the European Community over exploiting swordfish in the southeastern Pacific.
