The first edition was published in 1996 by the Public Health Service in London, and was written by Campbell, who has since retired from the Service's Mycology Reference Laboratory in Bristol. He, Johnson (Mycology Reference Laboratory), and Warnock (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Atlanta) incorporate new methods of diagnosing fungal disease, new antifungal agents, the emergence of resistance to several classes of drugs and subsequent increase in infections, and the growing concern with immunocompromised patients. They also include a new chapter on identifying fungi in histopathological sections and smears. Most of the chapters focus on types of molds: those with arthrospores, with aleuriospores, with holoblastic conidia, with enteroblastic conidia, mucoraceous molds, and miscellaneous molds.
