Wiarda is Dean Rusk Professor of International Relations at the University of Georgia and a Senior Scholar at the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) and the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars in Washington. D.C. He is the author of The Dutch Diaspora: The Netherlands and Its Settlements in Africa.
