商品簡介
In 1936, Marjorie Havreberg left her family home in South Dakota to work for a Senator in Washington, DC; later, as a civilian secretary for the War Department, she was stationed in neutral Turkey during WWII. Her letters home to her family, collected here, shed light on the social life of elites in Washington, DC, and on the international circle of American and European diplomats and civil servants in wartime Turkey, from the perspective of a small-town girl from the American West. In an introduction, editor Litoff (history, Bryant College) places the letters in historical context. Sally Enstrom, Havreberg's niece, remembers her aunt in an afterword. The book includes documents, b&w historical photos, and personal photos taken by Havreberg and her friends. Annotation c2012 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
