Smokers desperate to quit may want to try asking their friends andrelatives to send them encouraging text messages, a new study in the UKmedical journal The Lancet suggests.
Researchers at the London School of Tropical Medicine found thatsmokers were more than twice as like to quit successfully if they receivedsupportive text. The study tracked nearly 6,000 participants who wantedto quit smoking. They were split into two groups, with one groupreceiving the text messages, as part of a program called "txt2stop', andthe other group receiving text message unrelated to smoking.
Texts sent via txt2stop included: "This is it! -QUIT DAY, throwaway all your cigarettes. TODAY is the start of being QUIT forever, youcan do it!" and "Cravings last less than 5 minutes on average. To helptake away your attention, try sipping a drink slowly until the craving isover. " The study subjects could text back if they needed more help.
